Strengthening neurological care in the Goldfields - July 2025

Adrienna presents Kalgoorlie
Our Community Neurological Nurse Practitioner, Adrienna Elliott, recently presented at Kalgoorlie Hospital to a group of around 25 allied health and nursing staff. Her one-hour session focused on Managing MND Symptoms and Available Treatments, and included an overview of Motor Neurone Disease and emerging innovations in care. Adrienna also attended a presentation by Professor Merrilee Needham, Medical Director of Perron Institute for junior and senior doctors, contributing to Q&A discussions on community-based supports for people with neurological conditions. Thank you to the team at Kalgoorlie Health Campus for the warm welcome and your continued interest in improving neurological care in the region.

Telethon Family Festival October 2024

As first-time Telethon7 beneficiaries, we were proud to showcase our NeuroKids and NeuroCare services at this high-profile event with around 15,000 attendees. Our team engaged directly with families and carers to raise awareness of neurological conditions and the supports available, while fun activities and generous prize giveaways helped create a welcoming and engaging space for all ages.

Championing Brain Health at Government House July 2024

Chris Dawson and Etta Palumbo

To mark World Brain Day 2024, the Neurological Council’s Patrons, His Excellency the Honourable Chris Dawson AC APM and Mrs Darrilyn Dawson, hosted a reception at Government House to raise awareness of brain health and prevention.

The event brought together leaders from the neurological sector, government and community to highlight the importance of lifestyle-based prevention and local implementation of the World Health Organization’s Intersectoral Global Action Plan (IGAP). We thank our Patrons for their continued support and leadership in championing brain health across Western Australia.

Brain Awareness Week March 2025

Brain Awareness Week runs from 10 -16 March 2025 and is the global campaign that increases public awareness about the wonders of the brain, the importance of brain health and the positive impact brain science has on our everyday lives.

Now in its 29th year, the campaign is the brainchild of the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives (DABI) and is coordinated by the Dana Foundation.

The brain plays a significant role in the overall health and well-being of a person. Even though it is only about 2% of your body mass, it is in full in control of our body. Your brain is what makes you, you. It helps you think and remember, creates your personality and also determines if you are happy or sad. And, that’s in addition to controlling breathing, heart rate, our senses and other biological functions that are critical for survival.

Did you know… The brain is one of the most complex and fascinating organs in the human body. A piece of brain tissue the size of a grain of sand contains 100,000 neurons and 1 billion synapses. These systems support everything we do… but, when something goes wrong, these conditions can be very hard to treat. The good news is that promoting brain health can help prevent many of these conditions!

Take the Challenge and tick off these 6 Essentials for Brain Health

During Brain Awareness Week and throughout the year, the goal is to keep your brain healthy by eating right, moving more, and stimulating your mind.

We want our amazing brain to thrive across our lifespan, so protecting it should remain top of mind, and you can do this with:

  1. regular physical exercise
  2. a healthy diet, hydration and sleep routine
  3. continual learning and exposure to new things
  4. maintaining social connections and a positive mindset
  5. wearing protective head gear, when required, and being cautious of risks that could lead to head injuries
  6. reducing exposure to toxic substances - pesticides, fertilisers, smoke, pollution, excessive alcohol, vapes, unprescribed drugs.
