Spotlight on Geraldton: NeuFriends Making a Real Difference in Regional WA
27 August 2025
Sharing, Connecting and Learning in a Relaxed Setting
Living with a neurological condition in regional WA can be incredibly isolating — but in Geraldton, something special is happening.
The Geraldton NeuFriends Coffee Club & Neurological Support Group, launched in December 2024, has quickly become a vital meeting place for people living with neurological conditions, carers and families to come together, feel understood, and find support close to home.
More Than Just a Morning Tea
Held monthly at Geraldton Lotteries House, the group blends practical information, good conversation and genuine connection. Morning tea is always on offer — but so is something deeper: a sense of belonging.
The group is led by local volunteer Belinda, whose warm welcome and steady coordination keep the gatherings relaxed and inclusive. She’s supported by Neurological Council of WA Community Neurological Nurses, Deb Barndon and Janet Hall, who attend regularly to offer friendly support and help link attendees with services if needed.
As one participant shared:
“You hear ideas, you learn from what others are doing — and you don’t feel like the only one.” – Greg, living with Parkinson’s
Guest Speakers & Practical Advice
Each month includes a guest speaker from a local allied health service or community program. In September, the guest speaker will be podiatrist and practice owner Anna Kosch from Ankle & Foot Health Group. Anna is a passionate podiatrist who embraces the challenge of helping people stay on their feet through all stages of life.

Real Connection, Regional Impact
“Everyone’s different, but they get it. There’s no judgement. It’s real.” – Roy, living with MND

In a region without a resident neurologist and limited neurological services, the group fills a big gap. People who once felt alone now gather monthly to share ideas, swap tips, laugh, cry — and leave feeling more empowered.
Since its launch, over 110 people have attended, and numbers continue to grow. The June 2025 gathering welcomed a record 41 attendees — testament to the group’s growing presence and impact.
“Meeting others with similar conditions has been so important,” says Sharon, who lives in Dongara. “We share ideas. We laugh. There’s an understanding in the room — no one has to explain themselves.”
About NeuFriends
NeuFriends is the Neurological Council of WA’s statewide peer support program for people impacted by any neurological condition — including symptoms like tremors, fatigue, brain fog, or dizziness, and diagnoses such as Parkinson’s, MS, MND, epilepsy, FND, stroke, brain injury, rare and complex disorders, and many more. With over 600 different neurological conditions affecting 1 in 3 West Australians, the need for community, understanding and practical advice has never been greater.
NeuFriends groups meet monthly in relaxed, welcoming settings. They are free to attend and open to individuals, families and carers. Each group is volunteer-led, supported by Community Neurological Nurses, and shaped by the people who attend. Conversations flow easily — from sharing coping strategies and tips on navigating health or disability systems, to simply enjoying a cuppa and a laugh together. Guest speakers add extra value, covering topics like aged care changes, rehabilitation, and wellness strategies.
At its heart, NeuFriends is about connection: creating a place where people feel understood, less alone, and more confident to manage life with a neurological condition.
Groups currently meet in Geraldton, Mandurah, Albany and Perth, with more to come. Find out more about NeuFriends Neurological Support Groups.
