The Neurological Council of WA is expanding its free NeuroKids paediatric neurological nursing and health navigation service beyond Perth and the South West to the Great Southern and Mid West regions of Western Australia. As a Telethon7 2026 beneficiary, the Neurological Council will add two new NeuroKids neuro-nurses to their regional teams operating from their Albany and Geraldton offices. Made possible through the extraordinary generosity of the WA community, this growth in specialist neuro-nursing resources will improve timely access to neurological care, available closer to home for children, adolescents and families across these vast regions. NeuroKids represents a significant step toward equitable, high‑quality support and improved outcomes for children and young people with neurological symptoms or conditions, no matter where they live.
What is NeuroKids – and why it matters
Neurological conditions are among the leading causes of mortality and disability worldwide, and in WA, tens of thousands of children are affected. NeuroKids was launched to address a critical gap in paediatric neurological care, building on the success of the Neurological Council’s evidence-based NeuroCare model for adults. NeuroCare has demonstrated significantly improved outcomes and cost savings through community-based neurological nursing, and NeuroKids adapts this proven approach for children and adolescents.
For families navigating complex neurological conditions such as stroke and other brain injuries, neuromuscular or neurodevelopmental disorders, epilepsy, neuropathy, headache, FND or rare neurological conditions such as neurofibromatosis and childhood dementia, the journey can be overwhelming. Public and private waitlists for paediatric neurological assessment and treatment can stretch up to three years, leaving families isolated, uninformed and vulnerable.
With the help of Telethon7 Trust and Stan Perron Charitable Foundation, NeuroKids changes that.
Since its inception, NeuroKids has supported hundreds of children and adolescents in Perth and the South West, and via telehealth across WA, offering hope and practical solutions for families who often feel they have nowhere else to turn.
The Neurological Council’s specially trained Paediatric Community Neurological Nurses provide individualised, nurse-led neurological case management and holistic, family-centred care to help them manage the child’s condition, reduce anxiety and fear and support better health outcomes. This includes helping families, both pre and post-diagnosis, to understand and manage symptoms, medications and treatments, and guiding them through health, disability and education systems. Through home visits, telehealth consultations and community-based support, neuro-nurses act as bridges between hospital and home, helping prevent unnecessary hospitalisations, facilitating safe discharges and reducing uncertainty and distress for caregivers. Neuro-nurses also provide vital advocacy and connect families to primary and tertiary health and disability professionals, financial and social supports and community organisations and resources.
By expanding service access, strengthening regional health networks, and equipping families with the knowledge and confidence to manage complex neurological conditions, the Neurological Council is helping children receive timely, coordinated support while alleviating pressure on the state’s health system.
NeuroKids growth is underpinned by Telethon 7’s commitment to WA’s sickest kids. Their support ensures that families in Albany, Geraldton and surrounding communities can access the same high-quality care as those in Perth. Meanwhile, the Stan Perron Charitable Foundation continues to support our South West service, which has already made a profound difference for families in Bunbury and beyond.
Making a difference
The impact is clear. Families report improved confidence in managing their child’s condition, reduced emergency visits and better quality of life. Describing the value, our NeuroKids parents' explain:

“You took the feeling of overwhelm away and helped us get started with NDIS. It has been extremely helpful knowing you are available should we need more support.”
“From the moment you connected with us, you put all your energy into finding ways to support us. This service is not a tick box – it’s genuine care. Please continue this service as regional families will continue to benefit from this service and coordination.”
“I am so very grateful to our NeuroKids Nurse and the Neurological Council of WA for the amazing support they have given me and my family, but more importantly, my son.”
